Bike Responsibility

The Bike Responsibility Code is a set of guidelines to encourage safe, responsible, and respectful mountain biking. These rules vary slightly depending on the organization (e.g., IMBA, local trail systems), but the core principles are similar. Here’s a general outline:

1. Know Your Limits

  • Ride within your ability level.
  • Choose trails that match your skill set.
  • Progress gradually to avoid accidents.

2. Be Prepared

  • Wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
  • Carry tools, water, and a first aid kit.
  • Know the weather and trail conditions before heading out.

3. Yield Properly

  • Climbers have the right of way: Yield to uphill riders when descending.
  • Yield to pedestrians and equestrians: Slow down, announce your presence, and stop if needed.
  • Ride in control to avoid collisions.

4. Stay on the Trail

  • Do not cut switchbacks or create unauthorized trails.
  • Avoid skidding, which damages trails.
  • Stick to marked trails to protect the environment and wildlife.

5. Respect the Environment

  • Pack out all trash, including energy wrappers.
  • Avoid muddy trails to prevent erosion.
  • Leave wildlife undisturbed.

6. Communicate Effectively

  • Use a bell or call out when approaching others.
  • Make eye contact and exchange polite words, especially when yielding.

7. Ride Responsibly

  • Maintain control at all times.
  • Anticipate other riders and trail conditions.
  • Follow all posted signs and regulations.

8. Support Trail Stewardship

  • Volunteer for trail maintenance.
  • Donate to local trail organizations.
  • Advocate for sustainable trail development.
